Best sites for active holidays

Tuesday 6 April, 2010

Pencelli Castle, Wales

You’ll get a warm Welsh welcome and splendid views of the Brecon Beacons from this site. It has a modern washbock with family rooms, launderette, play area and a good pub 150m away.

Why it’s great

The site is in the Brecon Beacons, which makes it ideal for avid walkers. Or you can hire a mountain bike on site to explore cycle trails. Reception can also help you arrange a day of caving, rock climbing, canoeing or gorge walking with a local guide. There’s a riding centre nearby and children love Cantref Adventure Farm.

Mill Farm Caravan and Camping Park, Somerset

Nestled between the Quantock Hills and the Somerset coast, this site is ideally located for active holidays. It also has plenty of facilities, including washblocks and a shop.

Why it’s great

This site has its own boating lake and canoes. There’s a riding centre, too, and an arena on site for pony rides. Or hire a bike and get into the countryside for a picnic. The site has a large play area and two pools – the indoor pool is heated and the outdoor pool has a giant slide.

Hardwick Park, Oxfordshire

Oxfordshire has great countryside and bustling towns. This site is in the perfect spot to enjoy it all. After a busy day you can get refreshed in the modern washblocks, stock up at the on-site shop and then relax in the lakeside clubhouse.

Why it’s great

The site has its own watersports centre and two lakes. Take a lesson or polish your skills in water skiing, wake boarding, knee boarding and more. For a little less adrenaline, hire a pedalo and try to spot wildlife along the shore.

Haggerston Castle, Northumberland

There are 150 pitches on this site, all of which are hardstanding with electric hook-up. Fully-serviced pitches are available, too. The site also has two washblocks, a launderette, a shop and restaurants.

Why it’s great

You can hire a boat and paddle on the site’s lake or hire a bike and cycle around the beautiful grounds – the site was once a country estate. The kids will love the indoor and outdoor pools and the other on-site activities, which include tennis, football, fencing and archery.

Brighouse Bay Holiday Park, Scotland

This site sits in the middle of 1200 acres of walking country, on a peninsula with good beaches. It has everything an active family will need, including washblocks, a restaurant and a shop.

Why it’s great

There are countless activities on site, including ten pin bowling, boats, quad bikes, an indoor swimming pool, golf and fishing. The site also has its own riding centre, which offers lessons for beginners. More experience riders can take a ride to the beach. Or spend a day enjoying watersports at nearby Loch Ken.
