Electric Hook-up for tents on camp sites

With so many excellent and lightweight electric equipment avaliable for caravanners, it is not surprising that more and more camping enthusiasts are also keen to use electric hook-ups on camp sites. A word of caution, however - just because a camp site boasts that it ofers electric hook-ups (EHUs), don't assume there will be any in the camping field! Check before booking, and specify that you want an electric pitch.

The following advice is intended for campers who have little or no electrical knowledge and want some basic guidance on EHUs.

DO NOT be tempted to put together a DIY unit. Safety must be paramount when camping and the equipment you use to get electricity from the camp site's supply into your tent must complete with all curren British Standard guidelines.

You can buy a single or triple 13 amp socket, a distribution box with a transparent window housing a 10amp double pole minature circuit breaker (MCB) and 25amp Residual Current Device (RCD). These are sold complete at most reputable camping shops and online stores. You should expect to pay around £45.00 for the single unit and a few £s more for the triple unit.
