My husband and I stayed at this beautiful caravan site & always felt at ease and had no pressure, was like our own little place in the country
The birds like Colin the cockral
(as we named him)made our day when he came to our caravan daily and the gorgeous peacocks strolling around without a care in the world. It is an ideal place for peace and quiet and a central place to tour county Durham and Northumberland
the owners and staff are very friendly and the grounds are well maintained with newly planted fruit trees to the site. The walks around the site are spectacular with the river & of course the historic abbey ruins. The toilet/shower blocks are very well kept clean and warm even at low temperatures>> as we was on site in mid winter!!!
the ladies block is newly refurbished to a high standard>> I would love to re-visit this site soon when possible as I am already missing being there
A beatiful, immaculately maintained caravan park.Lovely Abbey ruins on the site , we recommend you go early in the morning(it opens at 10)before day visitors arrive and you will have it all to yourselves to explore. Peaceful and secluded location, especially so when the day visitors to the riverside leave, (this by 6pm.)
We were on a super site and was huge, lovely not to have water carriers to fill and waste water to empty. An adult only site but children are allowed as visitors so dont expect to be totally free of the little darlings. The owners are very friendly and helpful (we had trouble changing a gas bottle and Alan could not have been more generous with his time and assistance).
Lovely walks along the river and the woods, lovely site for dog owners. Could not recommend this site more highly and we will definitely be back.
we stayed at finchale abbey at easter, first time in our new caravan and new to caravaning after alot of years, lovely site, very peaceful, great walks with the dog, showers and toilets very clean....Been to a few other sites since here but none as nice as finchale, so we will be returning very soon, thanks ann for all your help. regards Pat and David Parkinson
: April in 2011in the grounds of old abbey with peacocks ducks and what looked like turkeys roaming freely gave this beautiful surroundings although the peacock was a bit noisy it added atmosphere to this very peaceful area brilliant walks over the bridge from the abbey for man and dog alike into durham where the choice of eating was excellent. Durham catherdral, castle and surrounding where breathtaking and serene, the rowing on the river watching the days traffic of people, students, children enjoying a stroll with every step and different routes showing off the castle in its majestic splendour. phew how could you end the day other than with friendly conversation and peaceful relaxing surroundings.
This site is one of our favourites for a weekend break.
When you arrive the whole scene lets you know your going to have a relaxing time, with the river trickling through the rugged countryside and the beautiful remains of the priory.
The toliets and showers have been "done -up" a bit this year... They are lovely and clean and free!! with those nice little touches, nice hand soaps, towels and free hair-dryer.
There is no bar or entertaiment on site but for us a good old BBQ and a couple of bottles of wine after playing in the river all day is entertainment enough.
The staff are all very friendly and helpful... nothing is too much trouble.
There is a small snack shop and vending machines selling "Goodies" at reasonable prices, and five minutes down the road is a large shopping complex.
We all give Finchale Abbey 5*****
