Managed by the Club on behalf of Durham City Council, this is an open and level site with cheerful beds of heather at the entrance, just off the A1(M) and within easy reach of the City of Durham. Many visitors use this as a convenient stop over en route to or from Scotland and its situation makes it a welcome break. But if you decide to stay longer, Durham is only three miles away, dramatically set on its 70-foot rocky semi-island in a hairpin bend of the River Wear. It's steeped in history and the panoramic views from every vantage point must make it one of the most picturesque cities in the UK. For walkers, the County Council arranges a series of guided walks - there's a useful leaflet.

excellent site in all respects. However if it your first visit like us, when the warden tells you to pick a pitch and let him know later which number he means asap ! We took him at his word and got told off because he did not tell us that we had to pick up the key fob for the barrier and when we returned later, he was most annoyed and informed us that we should have known we had to get the fob to go out of the site. Other than his attitude, the site has great facilities and tha disabled shower room was a real boon.

This is one of the best sites we have stayed on. It has excellent facilities, kept to a very high standard. The wardens we have met over the last couple of years have all been very welcoming and very friendly. The site is close to all amenities, whether you want shopping, walking, eating, etc. It is a firm favourite for us, and even though it isn't too far away it is like being on holiday. Highly recommended.

Built on a former colliery
and iron works, this site benefited from a £1 million cash injection from The Caravan Club, and the result is something special. It has been fitted out
to the highest standards and is perfectly located for a relaxing stop off on any northerly trip involving the A1. As such there is some traffic noise, but the many trees do absorb the hum.
As yet, the trees do not obscure the beautiful views over the hills and open farmland.
The attractive city of Durham with its magnificent cathedral is only three miles away, and a path runs directly from the site to the city centre. Beamish Open Air Museum is just 12 miles from the site and offers plenty to do.
The Caravan Club influence has transformed this site from
a simple stop-off location to a proper touring site. It is now
a perfect base from which to explore this popular area of the North East.

The Caravan Club has ploughed an impressive £1m into this site and in so doing has created a real gem. Built on the site of a former colliery and iron works, the Grange has been fitted out to the highest standards and is perfectly located for a relaxing stop-off on any trip involving the A1.
As such, there is some traffic noise, but it’s hardly obtrusive. What’s more, the club has taken steps to combat this by planting an army of young trees that will help absorb the noise as they mature. As they are, they don’t obscure the panoramic view of open farmland and hills enjoyed by the site.
A new purpose-built block houses the pristine washing facilities, which includes two individual shower-and-toilet cubicles, and a dedicated room for the disabled.
The attractive city of Durham is only three miles away and there is a riverside path that runs directly into the city centre.
What the Caravan Club has done very well is to transform The Grange from a simple stop-off location, to a proper touring site in its own right, which makes it a perfect base from which to explore this popular area of the North East.
