We planned a stay for two adults for five nights at Grafham Water Caravan Club Site. Because we were travelling around England we booked our stay directly through the site office. Although we own a caravan we were travelling with a tent this year due to us visiting friends in very busy city centres. We asked for a tent pitch with electricity. The woman I spoke with told us that an extra charge was applied because we weren’t travelling with the caravan and that we would be placed on ‘the paddock’ which was located just outside of the main part of the site. It sounded quite reasonable on the phone so we booked a pitch.
When we arrived it turned out that not only were we not located on the main site, we were actually outside of barriers or any other form of security such as cctv. A public road ran alongside the field, making the field accessible for anybody.
It was after having paid (we had no choice but to stay due to the time of day) that we found out that we were denied access to the main toilet and shower block because a key was needed to get access, which we weren’t provided with. There were basic facilities on the field. However, the roof of the men’s showers was being held up by electrical tape, the woman’s showers were closed of by a door that was so crooked that it wouldn’t actually close. No locks or any other form of security, only 50 meters removed from a public road.
After the second night we were so fed up we decided to confront the warden with the problems and our objections. The female warden became very defensive instantly and told us we were informed about the facilities. We were not, because if we had we would not have stayed at this site. We were expecting to have access to all the facilities mentioned in the Caravan Club booklet.

It might be a great site for caravans, it's certainly not for tents.

Our home site if you like Grafham Water Caravan Club Site is situated within easy access off the A1 just North of Bedford. For those who don't like to rely on sat nav the site is well signposted from the Buckden roundabout. The site is handy for visits to either Bedford or Cambridge, but is ideal for an activity weekend around the nearby lake.

The site has all the usual amenities you would expect from a Caravan Club site with the addition of a well appointed heated outdoor swimming pool (open May to September). The site shop has a limited selection of wares but the local Indian is within an easy walk and further afield some good pubs are to be had.

The site is with easy reach for us and one we use at the start of the season as a sort of dry run before we go further afield, that said the staff are some of the friendliest and most helpful we have met and give all a warm welcome. They will even help you set up if you are a novice seeking advice.

On the down side a couple of years back some of the bushes and hedges on the site were removed, the site is now a little open, but has more pitches which are also larger than average. These are a good selection of either grass or hard standing.

The site is lacking a club house and would suit couples as it has only a limited children's play area for the youngsters. It is doubtful that one will find a cleaner, more luxurious ablutions block this season. A small site but one which we would recommend for a weekend.

We stayed on this site in July 2007
The site had not long been taken over by the Caravan Club & re named Grafham water it was in need of improvement the club had already made a start with the swimming pool & made it fit for use & the wardens told us that the club had a lot of plans for the improvement of the site during the winter break.
The site is located next to Grafham water’s & we enjoyed using our bike’s to ride around it
If you do not own a bike one can be hired form a near by hire shop which has a café adjacent to it & this make’s a good stop for a rest & refreshments.
There are other cycle routes near the site but most seem to be on local roads & not really suitable if you have children with you.
The area dose not offer much else in the was of distractions unless you are willing to get the car out.

Caravan Park is set in a beautiful location with excellent facilities. The main site has the pitches very close together so as to cram as many units in as possible. If you are accustomed to the non-commercial type sites, such as those owned by the Caravan Club, you would be appalled at how small the pitches are! The overflow area known as 'The Paddock' is absolutely appalling! The only time I have seen similar scenes is on televison when travellers' camps have featured in the news. It was such an awful experience that we left on the first afternoon despite the fact that the owner categorically refused to give us a refund, even though they re-let the pitch that they had reserved for us. Luckily we found a caravan park just down the road (The Willows) which was absolutely delightful and the wardens were incredibly kind and accomodating. What a contrast!

Property manager response (12 Jul 2006)

We are sure that 99% of our customers will be amazed at this reviewer's negative comments, as they will have had completely the opposite experience at our park. What this person omits to mention is that they telephoned to book a pitch at the last minute, when there was only one pitch left due to a cancellation, and they omitted to mention that the most important criteria to them was being able to obtain a good signal with their satellite dish. The reviewer booked in on arrival and went to their allocated pitch, but returned to complain that there was no signal. This park has a great many trees and does not have good satellite reception, which was pointed out to them by the member of staff trying to find them a suitable pitch. They were then offered 3 different alternatives, which meant changing other customers' bookings since there were no free pitches, and they tried and refused all of the offers. Their pitch had not been re-let, because we had to keep swapping bookings around to try to accommodate them. We therefore felt that a refund was not justified in this case. They were very lucky to find a site with a vacancy at such a late stage; our site is always fully booked at weekends in the summer.
