This gem of a site is part of Burrs Country Park. It is surrounded by a wetland conservation area alongside the river Irwell and bordered on one side by the East Lancashire Steam Railway which provides splendid displays of steam locomotion while serving as a reminder of the site's heritage located as it is on what was formerly a cotton mill.
The facilities at Burrs are well up to the usual Caravan Club standards of excellence. Indeed Burrs is a regional winner in the 'Best Maintained Site' category of the 2009 Caravan Club's Calor Site Awards. There are 85 pitches of which 64 are hardstanding, all within easy reach of the spotlessly clean, heated toilet block.
Burrs Country Park itself offers a wealth of pleasures ranging from pleasant country walks in the conservation lands that surround the site or further afield along the banks of the Irwell to Summerseat and beyond. There are guided walks from the park and canoeing on the river. The remains of the mill and its chimney are worthy of investigation and for refreshment the Brown Cow Public House provides meals and drinks and sits conveniently adjacent to the site.
Take the car or a local bus into Bury (less than 10 minutes away) for the 'World Famous Bury Market' whose black puddings and wimberry pies (bilberries to southern folk) are not to be missed then settle down for lunch at the truly excellent Thompsons fish & chip restaurant (close to Mill Gate shopping centre where parking is easy) as featured on Michael Portillo's Great Railway Journeys TV programme.
If you have a day to spare you can take the Interlink tram from Bury for the half hour journey to Manchester and all that great city has to offer.
Prices in the Low Season March period when my wife and I visited were £15.30 for the pitch + 2 persons + hook-up with extra adults costing £5.00, an extra child £1.50 with dogs and awnings gratis.
