Had the misfortune to head there as part of a tour of Great Britain. Had the intention of staying two nights, just long enough to visit Greenwich and was annoyed to find that we could not park near the tent on the tent field as you have to park on the car park and presumably keep going back and too your car for anything that wouldn't fit in the tent.
I did suggest to the less than helpful Reception staff we pay the extra for a campervan pitch, but was told our campervan was and I quote ' Only a car with a mattress in the back." I must add that our much loved Citreon Berlingo is anything but a car with a mattress in the back as has electric hook up etc.
However the staff there clearly have an idea of the "right kind of camper" We left and won't be going back.
I would like to point out that my wife and I were celebrating our fourteenth wedding anniversary and are a professional couple in our forties. We turned up in the car with the tent, rather than a double decker bus or a converted horse box, as we are not the New Age Travellers the staff at Abbey Wood Caravan Club Site seemed to think we were.

Stayed here for a week, so we could see the Christmas light. The site is lovely a little oasis, in the hustle and bustle of the city. Everything is clean and tidy. The staff are very helpful. We had a flat tyre on our car, nothing was to much trouble. We were told we could stay another night if we wanted to. A spot we will come back to many times.

I admit the busy London scene was not my first choice of holiday destination. However, my brother and his family were coming across from Spain to visit London so it would be a good opportunity to meet up. I had to face up to the fact that my usual quiet caravanning experience was about to be shattered!

What a surprise my husband and I therefore had as we turned into the gates of Abbey Wood Caravan Site. Despite this being the busiest time of the year we were met with an air of tranquility. Out of nowhere, it seemed, we were surrounded by an abundance of trees and beautifully landscaped terraces. You wouldn’t have guessed that the site was full or even that we were just a 35 minute train journey away from London, Charing Cross. With spacious well defined pitches, the well established shrubbery added further shade and privacy. The site is cleverly designed to avoid long rows of vehicles. There are two excellent toilet blocks both with showers/privacy cubicles/veg preparation/laundry facilities, along with several well designed water and waste points. There is also an extensive play area. The recycling facilities were excellent. The Staff couldn’t do enough for you and were always tending the lawns, flower boxes and hanging baskets. The site was meticulously presented.

Abbey Wood, which is a lovely woodland area surrounding the ruins and grounds of the old Lesnes Abbey is directly opposite the site. This is a wonderful place for taking the dog for a walk or simply sitting and enjoying far reaching views over London.

The railway station is a short walk from the site and you can reach any of London’s attractions quite easily. Buses taking you into the City are also nearby.

Popular with many overseas visitors, there seemed to be a quiet respect amongst the guests and hearing several languages gently spoken gave the site a charming Mediterranean feel. Everyone was there to see and enjoy as much of London as they could cram into their few days stay and the conveniently situated site certainly allows for this.

We had a wonderful few days with my brother and his family. The peacefulness of the Abbey Wood site enabled us to recharge our batteries at the end of a busy day of sightseeing. And so, in hindsight, I will be the first to admit that I was wrong in my assumptions of London. I will happily visit Abbey Wood again and take the opportunity of exploring London further.
