Wake up to a fabulous sea view during your motorhome and caravan holidays in Whitley Bay, Tyne and Wear. Old Hartley Caravan Club site occupies an unrivalled position on the top of a cliff overlooking the bay. Take your bird identification book and train your binoculars on St Mary's Lighthouse, which sits on the nature reserve of St Mary's Island. Check the tide times before you wander across the causeway to the island, to avoid being cut off by the incoming tide.

Old Hartley Caravan Club site itself offers a warm welcome to members with their own motorhomes or touring caravans. If you aren't a member, you should be able to join at the caravan park, but if you have a tent unfortunately you will not be permitted to pitch it on Caravan Club sites like this one.

As you'd expect from a Club site, the facilities are excellent on this park, which has more than 60 pitches with electric hook ups.

While you are in this part of Northumberland it's worth going to see an exciting new rock and earth sculpture, Northumberlandia. This is a giant reclining woman with walking trails built into the construction and she's inland near Cramlington. She's an awesome sight and there's a visitor centre there, too.

Follow the River Tyne inland from the sea and you'll discover lots of museums and tourist attractions. There's North Shields Tourist Information Centre, Bedes World Museum with lots of medieval fun and know-how, and The Great North Museum at Hancock, which has a T-Rex to set your child's imagination racing.

On the promenade at Whitley Bay you'll find The Links Art Gallery and Studio Café, which makes an ideal place to enjoy coffee and a snack while watching the seascape. It's worth checking to find out what's on at The Links Theatre in Marine Avenue, too. This little playhouse often hosts tribute bands, cabaret and family theatre shows.

If you're keen on photography or history, it's worth taking a look at Tynemouth Castle, just down the coast. This medieval priory and fortress is now a romantic ruin and you can climb up it for fantastic views of the town and the sea.

Another tourist attraction on this stretch of the north east coast is the South Shields Museum and Art Gallery, which is close to an ancient Roman fortress.

For all fans of British engineering, the Stephenson Railway Museum is a 'must' to visit. There's a fantastic collection of vintage locomotives for you to see here, and you can often get a ride on a steam train, just the thing to make a child's holiday complete.

Families with young children and toddlers know the value of a soft play adventure playground, especially when it's too wet to enjoy the park. So for you, there's the Whitley Bay Treehouse Soft Play tourist attraction, a three-storey soft play construction, with baby changing facilities and a café.
