As sites go, Bainbridge Ings Caravan & Campsite has, arguably, some of the most pleasant views of any campsite in the country. It welcomes people enjoying tent, motorhome and caravan holidays in Wensleydale. When our reviewer visited the site it was immaculate, with milk churns and old chimney pots filled with colourful flowers a welcoming sight at the entrance.

Pass the reception building and owners' house and you'll find six acres of large open fields, lined with traditional stone walls, giving you plenty of sheltered space to pitch, relax or play. There's a large hardstanding area too, which allows the largest of RVs to pitch, in addition to smaller motorhomes and caravans. There are 30 pitches in total, with eight of them being hardstandings.

In addition there are two static holiday caravans for hire. The Pemberton and the Leona both have the same layout. Each caravan sleeps four and has one double bedroom one small (child-sized) twin bedroom, a lounge and bathroom. Each caravan has a TV, microwave oven, gas fire, cooker and fridge. There's a heater in the bedroom and a towel rail in the bathroom. Take your own towels and bedlinen, but duvets with covers are provided. No pets are allowed in these hired holiday caravans and smoking is not allowed.

This is very much a family site – family owned and run, and equally suitable for visiting families. Dogs are welcome but must be kept on a lead and exercised off-site. While Mark and Janet Facer run the site now, it has been in their family for over forty years. Receptionist Shirley Pratt is on hand to welcome you, too. Please discuss your time of arrival when you book, since the office is generally open from 8am to noon, then 1pm to 8pm. If you're going to arrive later than 8pm please contact the campsite and arrive before 10pm at the very latest.

Milk, eggs and gas refills are available to buy on site. If you have no working fridge in your caravan or motorhome, or if you're a tent camper or simply off on a picnic, then you'll be glad to know you can get your ice packs frozen here. If you'd like your mobile phones and electronic devices charged up in the office, this can be arranged in return for a small donation to the Air Ambulance Service, which is so essential in mountainous regions such as this. Cash is king in the countryside and this site, among others, cannot process card payments.

Facilities at Bainbridge Ings Caravan & Campsite include toilets and showers, laundrette with a tumble dryer, dishwashing facilities, a motorhome service point, chemical WC disposal point, water, grey water disposal, rubbish bins. The toilet block has shaver points, hair dryers and a socket for hair straighteners. Wi-Fi is available in various places on the campsite. The hot showers and hair dryers take 20p coins and the washing machine and tumble dryer are also coin-operated. There is a late-arrivals area on the site, and you can book in up until 10pm.

The campsite has a 'quiet after 11pm' policy and requests people not to drive vehicles into or around the site after 11pm, to ensure that everyone can enjoy the peaceful surroundings of the countryside.

The town of Hawes is a fifteen-minute walk, but also not to be missed is the pretty village of Gayle, close to the site, where the attractive Gayle Mill is worthy of a visit. There are buses running from Hawes to Leyburn, Richmond, Sedburgh, Settle and Ingleton. This is ideal if you want to leave your vehicle safely pitched and plugged into the hook-up on site, while you go off walking, sightseeing and exploring Wensleydale.

Walk into Hawes for its lovely shops, cafés, restaurants and pubs. There are tourist attractions to visit right here too, so don't miss your chance to visit Wensleydale Creamery and Restaurant, Rope makers, a museum and crafts on foot.

If you enjoy walking holidays, caving holidays, mountaineering or scenic drives you will love staying at Bainbridge Ings Caravan and Camping site. Walk sections of The Pennine Way (half a mile away), using this as your base camp. Or visit famous show caves in and around Ingleborough, to see vast decorated caverns. See the castle at Richmond, visit Bolton Abbey, and see mighty waterfalls such as Aysgarth.
