We are tucked in between the Lake District and the Pennines. The area is an attraction in its own right as well as giving easy access to the mountains and moors on either side. We are in a rain shadow area, so whatever you might expect in the Lake District, you'll get less here.
Attractions for visitors vary from the highest mountain in England to the mighty Hadrian's Wall; and from museums such as the award-winning Tullie House at Carlisle to the unique and mind-boggling Bowes Museum at Barnard Castle, a French Chateau on the grandest scale in the middle of County Durham, filled with the most amazing collection of artefacts. And then there's the Rheged Visitor Centre at Penrith, a feast of Garden Centres, and a thriving local alpaca industry, not to mention the famous Settle-Carlisle railway line running through some of the most glorious scenery in the land.
