Discover a selection of fun indoor Easter activities and UK-wide spring holiday inspirations.

Easter is on the way, and although we’ll be celebrating under lockdown (just), the Easter family activities in this guide ensure there’s still plenty of fun to be had. In light of the good news that people in England will be free to head off for a long-awaited staycation from April 12, we’ve also included some tantalising Spring holiday inspirations.

Indoor Easter Egg Hunts

Bring the action inside.

Indoor Easter egg hunts are just as fun and mean no more muddy shoes or trampled flowerbeds.

Chocolate eggs make sense as prizes but go for something healthier if you’d prefer. Bear in mind, though, your kids might be less than excited to discover a prize that’s green and broccoli shaped!

Once you’ve got the prizes, it’s time to hide them and lay your clues. Here are some ready-made clues in case you want them. Sprinkle the trail with mini stashes or gather up the booty into one great, glittering horde of chocolatey treasure.

Cook Easter Treats

No guide on family activities for Easter 2021 would be complete without something food themed.

Hot cross buns are delicious, but let’s face it, children tend to prefer something sweeter. Christmas is a fading memory by the time we get to Easter – in other words, we and our families are about due a treat. So how about celebrating spring by baking some delicious desserts?

Remember – Easter isn’t all about chocolate. It’s also about carrot. Carrot cake, that is.

Carrot Cupcake Recipe

For adults and children alike, carrot cupcakes are as easy to make as they are tasty to eat. Here’s our recipe for a delicious batch of 18-20 fairy cakes or 12 muffins worth of spongy carroty delight.

Ingredients

•2 large eggs

•175g golden caster sugar

•150ml oil (sunflower or rapeseed)

•200g self-raising flour

•3 tsp mixed spice (or cinnamon and ginger)

•2 medium carrots, grated

•1 tsp vanilla extract (optional)

•Zest of 2 oranges (optional)

•Chopped nuts (optional)

For the topping

•1½ x 200g tubs light soft cheese

•50g icing sugar

•A few drops of orange juice

Method

1.Preheat your oven to 180°C, gas mark 4.

2.Place your paper fairy cake cases or paper muffin cases in either a deep bun tin or muffin tin.

3.Whisk the eggs, sugar and oil in a bowl for 2-3 minutes until light and fluffy.

4.Gently fold in the flour, spices, grated carrot and vanilla extract using a metal spoon until thoroughly combined.

5.Pour the mixture into your fairy cake or muffin cases. Cook fairy cakes for 20-25 minutes, muffins for 20-25 minutes. After checking all are well risen and golden brown, carefully remove from the oven and leave to cool.

6.For the frosting, beat either the soft cheese or the orange juice with the icing sugar until smooth. Chill the mixture then spread it over the tops of the cooled cakes.

7.Finish by adding mini chocolate eggs or home-made marzipan bunnies for added ‘Easter’.

Paint Eggshells

Eggshells, they go in the bin, don’t they? Wrong! Not when you’re planning a fun weekend of Easter family activities anyway.

Eggshells make for great little canvasses and considering all the baking you’ve been inspired to do, you’re going to have some spare. Time to get your paints and paintbrushes out.

But what to paint? Humpty Dumpties, ringed patterns, one-eyed egg monsters… You and your family’s imaginations are the limit. You can get creative with glitter and googly eyes too. Here’s some fun egg painting inspiration

If you need shells, take an egg, make small holes at both ends, then blow into one of the holes until all the contents have been removed. If you’re planning to bake, remember to do this before making your mixture.

Egg painting is fun, rewarding, and makes good use of what would otherwise get thrown away as waste. And who knows? Maybe with a little nurturing your arty kid will turn out to be the next Fabergé.

Plan Your Staycation

If you live in England, you’re allowed to take a staycation from April 12!

As that’s only a week or so after Easter, we actually advise you to get yours planned sooner. We’re all gasping for a break and that means demand for accommodation will be high. Make your booking early to avoid missing out.

Be inspired. Here are a few places where you can enjoy the shoots, blooms and sweet perfumes of Spring in all their magnificent new-born glory.

The Peak District

Britain’s oldest National Park covers the southern most tip of the Pennines. Hike up to rocky summits and gaze over the wild heather moorlands and ancient stone villages below.

Norfolk

If this spring is anything like the last, we’ll want to make the most of the warmth and the sunshine. There’s no place better to do that than on a beach. You’ll find many of the UK’s most perfect stretches of golden sand along the Norfolk coast.

Yorkshire

Witness the mountains, valleys, moors and forests of ‘Gods Own Country’ reborn in swaths of green shoots and rainbow blossoms.

We’re sure these family activities will fill your Easter 2021 with laughs and smiles. And wherever you choose to head off for your staycation, enjoy your trip!
