Go Wild Thetford Camping – Nigel’s Story from the Heart of High Lodge

I’ve spent a lifetime wandering forests, but there’s a moment—a hush—that only Thetford Forest gives you. It happens just after the sun falls through the pines at High Lodge. The scent of resin and earth rises, the last cyclists whisper past on the trails, and the forest exhales. That’s the moment I fell for this place. And that’s why I opened Go Wild Thetford Camping: so you can sleep in the pause between day and night, with High Lodge as your front garden.

This isn’t the usual campsite with the forest “nearby.” This is rare. You can pitch a tent or pull up with your campervan, motorhome, or touring caravan and wake within a breath of High Lodge—one of England’s most loved forest hubs. Step out of your accommodation and straight into miles of waymarked walking paths, family-friendly adventures, and some of the best cycling trails in the country. You don’t drive to the day out—you live next to it.

Mornings start with birdsong and a soft amber light drifting through the trees. Grab a coffee and choose your pace:

Wander the waymarked walking trails, from gentle loops perfect for little legs to longer woodland rambles where the pines part to let the sky in.
Hire bikes or bring your own and follow graded cycling routes—greens for easy spins, blues and reds for flow and fun. Smooth forest tracks, playful corners, and those quiet sections where it’s just you and the wheel-hum.
Take the kids to the play areas that dot the forest, where dens are built, balance beams are conquered, and imaginations run wild under the canopy.
Fancy some altitude? Go Ape’s treetop adventure lifts you into the boughs—zip wires, rope crossings, and laughter carried on the wind.
When the calendar’s right, High Lodge hosts events and open-air concerts, the forest itself becoming a stage. There’s nothing quite like live music drifting through the pines as evening settles.
Make a day of it with picnic spots, sculptures tucked between trees, and a welcoming café for that well-earned treat.

And then you come home—to camp. To a fire-side story, a skillet supper, or simply the comfortable quiet inside your van or caravan while the trees stand guard. Families find space to breathe here. Couples find a shared hush. Solo wanderers find the company of the woods. Dogs, noses twitching, think they’ve discovered paradise.

What makes Go Wild Thetford Camping different isn’t just the setting—it’s the permission to linger in a place most people only visit for a few hours. High Lodge is designed for discovery; camping alongside it turns a day out into a living, breathing weekend. Wake to trailheads instead of traffic. Swap the rush to arrive for the joy of already being there.

I’m Nigel, and I’ll be the one pointing you toward the day’s best light on the trails, the quietest spots for a picnic, and which route will fit the little adventurers best. I’ve watched first bike rides happen here, seen grandparents walk the easy loops, and helped families plan their first Go Ape leap. If you’re new to forest life, I’ll make it simple. If you’re seasoned, I’ll show you a corner you haven’t found yet.

Practical bits—because good stories need good planning:

We welcome tents, campervans, motorhomes, and touring caravans.
You’re moments from High Lodge: walking routes, cycling trails, play zones, Go Ape treetop adventures, picnic areas, a café, and seasonal events.
Bring your bikes or hire on-site at High Lodge. Helmets recommended for all riders.
Family-friendly, with plenty to do for all ages and abilities.
Forest etiquette keeps the magic intact: respect wildlife, stick to marked trails, and leave only footprints.

If you’ve ever wanted to fall asleep in a forest and wake already on the trail, this is your chance. Not many places in England let you camp this close to a flagship Forestry England site—and fewer still give you this much to do without ever starting the engine.

Come for the trees. Stay for the hush. And let High Lodge write a little of your story alongside mine.

Ready when you are. Nigel.
