Outney Meadow Caravan Park Bungay, Suffolk, East England, NR35 1HG (Location map)
1st March to 31st October
Outney Meadow Caravan Park is a charming, three-star, family run caravan park close to the popular Suffolk market town of Bungay in the southern section of the famous Norfolk Broads.
This campsite is open from the beginning of March until the end of October every year, welcoming guests with motorhomes, touring caravans and tents. Caravan storage is offered here and there are some holiday homes on site that are available for hire. All of the pitches at Outney Meadow Caravan Park benefit from an electric hook-up, plus there are some hardstanding pitches, too.
The park sits amongst woodland, and hedges have been planted around the site to ensure that those who've pitched here enjoy a well sheltered and peaceful location for their camping and caravan holidays. This is also a dog friendly campsite, but do ensure your dog is under control at all times and on a lead, and owners must clean up after their dogs.
Facilities at Outney Meadow Caravan Park include toilets and showers, a laundrette, a washing up area and a dedicated dog walking area. The site is an LPG stockist so guests can change canisters easily during their stay. The park sits on the River Waveney and private areas of river frontage are available for guests wanting to enjoy a day’s fishing during their stay. In addition, there are many picnic tables across the site for guests that want to enjoy the weather and eat lunch, and maybe even breakfast and dinner, outside, while off-ground barbecues are permitted on the site.
The outdoor life is clearly embraced here and if you want to spend some time on the water, you can hire a canoe. Prefer dry land? Hire a bike. There are lots of routes perfect for walkers and cyclists to explore close to this campsite, while the area has many more great trails nearby including parts of the National Cycle Network for those heading out on two wheels. Sporting facilities found close to the park include football pitches and tennis courts, while there is also a leisure centre with an indoor swimming pool nearby.
Head out of the campsite and Bungay Castle is found close to the park, while travelling further afield will introduce the incredible National Trust properties of Horsey Windpump and the Elizabethan House Museum. Other popular and family friendly attractions found close by include Fritton Lake Country World, Flixton Aviation Museum and Somerleyton Hall and Gardens. Guests are also encouraged to travel into Norwich, which is a city of great history and has a terrific castle with a museum and art gallery, plus a bustling market and an impressive cathedral.
The East Anglian coast boasts some of the best beaches in England as well as some lively tourist towns, with Great Yarmouth and Lowestoft both around half an hour away by car. Indeed, Outney Meadow Caravan Park is a good base from which to explore the whole region. Ipswich is about an hour's drive away, pretty Aldeburgh in the Suffolk Coast and Heaths Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty is a 50-minute drive from this campsite, while ancient Colchester, with its famous zoo, Roman castle and impressive gatehouses is also worth visiting.

The site is well located for those who don’t want to contend with narrow country lanes or difficult road conditions as it is right next to the A143 as a dedicated exit from the major roundabout serving Bungay’s town centre. It’s a great site for your first towing expedition. The area where you arrive is a bit scruffy, but once through the gate, the site smartens up. It is split up into separate touring fields but when we visited, only the field at the end of the main access road was open. Pitches are not rigorously marked, so it is a matter of siting your van so you can get on a hook up and not inconveniencing the other visitors. The washroom facilities are dated, but they work and kept clean. The push button showers are free although not especially hot at the time of our visit. As a low season destination, Outney Meadow is fine. It is open all year, has hook-ups available and the site roads are compacted gravel so there should be minimal slithering about in poor weather. Head there later in the season, and you can hire bikes on site and even canoes to go looking for wildlife on the River Waveney. There is a golf course within a five minute walk and fishing on the river or in the nearby lake isIt is well located for a visit to the southern end of the Norfolk Broads and is around a half hour drive from the Suffolk coast.
