Fen Farm Caravan & Camping Site – Peaceful Mersea Island Holidays in Essex

Fen Farm Caravan & Camping Site is a quiet, family‑run campsite on Mersea Island near Colchester, offering coastal camping, touring pitches and static caravan holiday homes in a beautiful North Sea setting. Tucked away in the small village of East Mersea, this long‑established park (owned by the Lord family since 1918, with the first tents pitched in 1923) is ideal for relaxed Mersea Island holidays, weekend breaks and longer stays on the Essex coast.

Camping, Touring & Motorhome Pitches on Mersea Island
Fen Farm is a popular Mersea Island campsite for tents, touring caravans and motorhomes of all sizes, with spacious pitches in peaceful surroundings close to the beach and countryside. It’s a great choice if you’re looking for camping near Colchester, touring caravan sites on Mersea Island or dog‑friendly coastal breaks in Essex, with easy access to seaside resorts such as Clacton‑on‑Sea and historic Colchester town for days out.

Static Caravan Holiday Homes – Owner‑Occupied Statics in Essex
The park is home to around 90 fully serviced, owner‑occupied static caravans, making it a sought‑after location for holiday caravans on Mersea Island. If you’re interested in a static caravan or holiday home for sale in Mersea, Fen Farm’s established, low‑key atmosphere and coastal location make it an attractive base to enjoy regular short breaks and longer stays by the sea.

Tranquil, Back‑to‑Nature Family Breaks
There’s no clubhouse and no swimming pool at Fen Farm – guests come here for peace, quiet and simple seaside fun. Children can enjoy the on‑site play areas with swings, seesaws and climbing frames, or head out ‘crabbing’ in the nearby creeks, playing on the beach or paddling in the sea, while two open fields are perfect for ball games, frisbee, kite flying and evening dog walks.

Dog‑Friendly Mersea Island Camping
Fen Farm is a dog‑friendly campsite with dedicated dog walks and waste bins around the park, plus a dog‑friendly beach and plenty of local footpaths close by. Whether you’re planning a walking holiday on Mersea Island, coastal bird‑watching or gentle strolls with your four‑legged friend, this Essex caravan site gives you direct access to nature, sea air and big skies.

Award‑Winning Facilities & Eco‑Friendly Touches
Guests at Fen Farm benefit from award‑winning toilet and shower facilities, with solar‑powered hot water backed up by gas for reliability. There’s a wheelchair‑accessible shower and toilet, a family shower room, a well‑equipped laundry with coin‑operated washing machines, tumble dryers and an iron, plus washing‑up sinks and a freezer available for campers. The park’s environmentally conscious approach, peaceful setting and long history make it one of the best‑loved Mersea Island campsites for couples and families over many generations.

In recognition of the work done by the Lord family to protect and sustain the local environment, the site has been given a David Bellamy Gold Conservation Award.

If you really want to get back to nature on your camping holiday in Essex, the Blackwater Estuary National Nature Reserve is not far to the west of Fen Farm Caravan Site and the Essex Wildlife Trust’s Abberton Reservoir is nearby too. Another Essex Wildlife Trust site at Fingringhoe Wick, overlooking the Colne Estuary, is also nearby with a good visitor centre to engage visitors of all ages.

Historic Colchester with its Roman roots, famous castle, great shopping and other handy amenities such as swimming pools, great restaurants and a zoo is only about a 30-minute drive away. But, of course, if you are leaving Mersea Island during your stay at Fen Farm Caravan Site, be certain to check the tide times to make sure you can cross The Strood upon your return!

This site is a real hidden gem, if you want to get away from it all this is the site you should choose. Lots of open space right next to the beach with good old fashioned entertainment for the kids with 2 play areas and a huge open field for games, kite flying and dog walking as well as colouring completions and geocaching. There is Wifi so they won't be totally cut off but you may find they are too busy to bother. Award winning toilet blocks with disabled & family facilities. Wardens on duty all day and night to deal with any problems or disturbances from other visitors. I think the person referring to noise and jet skis must have stayed elsewhere as they are not allowed at Fen Farm. Staff are all helpful and friendly and all dogs welcome at campsite, beach, nearby Country Park and in local pub restaurants. There is loads to do in the surrounding area and the fabulous Colchester Zoo is just a short drive away. Get booking to avoid disappointment.

We come at least once a year, usually more - in fact we're coming tomorrow for Easter. Its my favourite site! Really easy - relaxing, clean, and with fab shower facilities! Best of all for me is the lack of amusement arcades! There are fantastic walks, as well as access to a beach. We did once have a bit of a noisy group near us, but a word in the wardens ear - and it was dealt with immediately! Also, they don't allow it to be rammed either - at full capacity it doesn't feel too busy! 😀 x

Absolutley love this little gem in Essex, It has everything you need for a stress releasing break, the site is immaculately kept, the shower block is spotlessly clean and checked on constantly, the wardens, staff and owners are wonderful, helpful and full of local knowledge, I cant praise this gem enough, we came in 2014 and loved it so much we have a seasonal pitch here, what more canI say, get booking, you will not regret it.

Love this place. Been coming here 7 years now during the school holidays. All staff are fantastically helpful. Park is kept immaculately clean. The shower blocks are great with music too. Never had a problem with noise. The wardens are always on hand if you have a problem and it is dealt with very quickly. My son is 15 and still chooses Fen Farm over any other campsite. Lots of lovely walks to have with the dogs. Beach is good. Again we have never had a problem with jet skis. Looking forward to coming back again in August.

This is a lovely site, staff are very friendly and helpful. Wardens keep the site quiet after 11pm and the toilet block is fantastic! Kids had space to play and we made use of the grass field to fly their kites. We will be returning :)

My grandparents had a static caravan on this site. Since then they have made it a touring and camping site and myself and 3 children (1 disabled) and my parents have been camping here.
Very spacious and child friendly. The amenities are clean and in excellent condition.
The beach is a short walk and there is a pub opposite but it's a quiet site.
We have been spending 2 weeks here every summer holiday for the past few years and our children are always asking when we are going back.
Simple to book and friendly staff.
Suits old and young. And disabled friendly.

Monday to Thursday, quiet and OK, Friday to Sunday it is dreadful, full of unsupervised kids playing between the caravans at cricket, football, frisbies etc. There are gangs of adults boozing and shouting till early hours. Dont bother to report them! Jet skis revving up all day and being driven in and out.

Property manager response (24 Mar 2016)

We are very sorry you had a bad experience at our site. Our wardens are always on hand to help with any issues including other campers and keep a tight check on our quiet after 11pm rule. Also, we do not allow Jet Skis on our camping site.
