Wellington, Somerset

If you're going to Somerset on your caravan holidays, this campsite, about five miles outside Taunton, might be worth considering.

Cadeside Caravan Club Site is a small yet popular site, offering 16 hardstanding touring pitches in a well-sheltered location. The park is open all year and welcomes Caravan Club members and non-members. There is also a large storage area.

You are reminded that there is no toilet block here – it's a basic caravanning experience. However, this is a dog friendly campsite and there's a designated dog walking area near this site.

However, pitch here and you're only about a quarter of an hour's drive from Taunton, so if you need to stock up on supplies, or if you want to pop out for a meal, you're not too far from civilisation. Taunton is the county town of Somerset and while here you could also enjoy time at Hestercombe Gardens, at the Museum of Somerset or Vivary Park.

Cadeside Caravan Club Site is found a short distance outside the quaint Somerset village of Wellington, and gives visitors unrivalled access to the beautiful countryside and rolling hills of the county. Its location also gives you access to Dorset and Devon, too, owing to the fact that you're only a short drive from the M5.

This campsite is accessed from junction 26 of the M5, which is awfully convenient for getting to and from it. Drive south down the motorway and in under 40 minutes you could be wandering around Exeter, maybe visiting the cathedral, catching a bite to eat or enjoying some retail therapy. Or drive about 45 minutes in the opposite direction for a day beside the seaside at Weston-super-Mare, where the beach, the famous pier and a true, traditional family day out await. Fish and chips, anyone?

Another seaside option is Exmouth, a 40-minute drive from this campsite. Follow the Exmouth and Orcombe Point Walk, enjoy time in Phear Park or just enjoy a day on the beach. You're also just a 50-minute drive from the pretty town of Lyme Regis that sits on the Dorset coast. Take in the famous harbour wall, known as the Cobb, or maybe go fossil hunting along the shoreline.

The pretty Devon town of Tiverton is just 20 minutes from this site by car, and the Victorian, National Trust run Knightshayes Court makes for a lovely day out – especially if the weather is a touch unpredictable.

The Exmoor National Park is also nearby if you've pitched at Cadeside Caravan Club Site on your caravan holidays in Somerset. Explore the area on foot, or on bike, enjoy breathtaking views across the Somerset coast from the top of Porlock Hill, or go horse riding, fishing, canoeing or climbing. And as Exmoor National Park has been designated the first International Dark Sky Reserve in Europe, how about some sensational stargazing?

And that's not all. Dartmoor National Park is to the south of this campsite – Princetown, in the heart of Dartmoor is about a 70-minute drive down the M5. While there, visit Dartmoor Prison Museum. The wilds of Dartmoor are well worth taking time to discover, at your own pace or on a guided walk.
